I have been watching as this building has been transformed into a new restaurant. The Shanghailander Palace is probably going to open sometime in mid September. I had a chance to view the interior and I think this will be a wonderful restaurant for special occasions. I was impressed with its separate private dining rooms. I look forward to seeing the menu and the final interior design.
Shanghailander Palace Restaurant
The Shanghailander Palace is located at Hacienda Center that’s where the 99 Ranch Market shopping center is at. This restaurant is on the boarder of Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights.

Went to the Green Menu Vegetarian Cooking Class at the Hacienda Heights Library on September 1. It was an interesting group. Not sure what their main agenda is. But they also have classes on spiritual living. The meetup events are run by volunteers. Met several nice people and got to hear some stories from what sound like vegetarian true believers.
I always find the dynamics of these groups insightful. If you see me at any of these met up come over and say hi. I plan on going to the next one at the library. They are going to make moon cake, yum.
I learned how to say white sugar in mandarin at this meet up so it was well worth the time. Oh, and did I mention we got to taste the food that was being papered. That is a good way to get me to a meeting, feed me. Today’s recipe was French hor dourves and veggie abalone pumpkin.
Veggie Abalone PumpkinSoy Meat Substitute
I also learned that the soy meat substitute can keep for up to a year in the refrigerator.
The French hor dourves to me tasted more like sweet and sour salad. I am not too sure I would bring this to a party for my non vegetarian friends. However the veggie abalone pumpkin is something I would take to a potluck type party. It had a great combination of black bean sauce and basil.

Update – Hong Long Supermarket is closed. The sign says for remodeling. However people I have talk to who live nearby said they were told it is plain closed. For good.
Hong Kong Supermarket ClosedHong Kong Supermarket Hacienda Heights
Hong Kong Supermarket in Hacienda Heights offers low prices and some hard to find groceries. I like shopping at this supermarket not only because it is close to me, but they also have items I can’t always find at the other major Asian supermarkets in the area. This is a value priced supermarket and they have pricing structure that can save almost everyone a bit of money. While Hong Kong Supermarket does have food items that other stores don’t carry, in general, they don’t have quite as wide a selection of each product category. So they do have tofu, but not as many brands as some of the other stores. However, they often make up for not having as many brands with very good prices. I also seem to hear more Cantonese spoken at this store than in some other stores.
As you will notice in the video the bakery has chocolate mousse. So now I really want go back and try their chocolate mousse.
Hacienda Tae Kwon Do SchoolTae Kwon Do School in Vons shopping center
As I was training the dog today I stopped by and looked at a few store. The first was the Tae Kwon Do school. I always enjoy watching martial arts training. I didn’t stay long this evening because it was a young children’s class. But still interesting.
Nini Bakery in Hacienda HeightsNini Bakery in the Vons shopping center Hacienda Heights
I did a little window shopping Nini Bakery. I believe this is a Chinese bakery. The food always looks good in here. I often think I would like to stop in the morning for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.
The other day I noticed several times when my phone was picked the call was immediately lost. After a bit of experimentation I realized that the cord on the phone was bad. Now getting dated electronic parts is getting harder and harder. Each day we move further into what used to be the future, things of the past are more difficult to find. While there are still corded phones they are not nearly as common as they used to be.
The main point is I needed a new cord or new phone. Usually the small 99 cent and up stores are a great resource for finding dated electronic connectors. Whether that is connecting a phone handset to the phone cradle or finding old AV wires. Yes, you guessed it, I still have a VCR. The bonus is these connections are usually quite inexpensive when bought at local dollar stores.
I found my phone cords in Hacienda HeightsPinatas and Balloons Hacienda Heights
This store also had a few Piñatas and a big selection of Balloons. While waiting in line I had the chance to talk to a lovely couple who were shopping at U Mart for bird food to feed the wild birds. They mentioned the squirrels are really bad since work along the 60 was done. I’m not sure exactly where they live, but I imagine east of Hacienda Boulevard. I was looking to live in that area and there were a lot of squirrels.
These stores are always small businesses. So shopping there helps the community. I would rather help a neighbor than send the money out of the community into the banks of some uncaring big corporation.
The happy ending is that I did indeed find the phone cords I needed and I had the chance to help a local small business in the process.
